Yeah, you nailed it. I was at a reading once and the writer stopped in the middle of his piece, looked out at the audience and spoke a truth - to himself -that I never forgot. "You've got an idea, do you? Think you're on to something new? Let's have a little reality pay us a visit. Be straight: You're no Jack Kerouac. Not now, not ever. You're no Jack Kerouac. Better try to be yourself, it's your only shot at anything." That mantra was repeated a few times throughout the piece, always looking directly at the audience, but we were a mirror. It grew more plaintive each time, until by the end he didn't have to say the whole thing, just "You're no ....." and we all got it. I still get it. Live life, do the work, shut the hell up.
