As a school administrator I believed our charge was to guide adolescent development, and that included self-expression, the formation of identity, especially culturally-related choices, but I faced immense pressure to "crack down" and afterward every problem was attributed to my "lax policies." Allen Iverson in the NBA "inspired" a whole dress code to squash his inner-city style; Colin Kaepernick showed his growing political awareness in steps of appearance, from traditional to corn rows to an Afro. Aren't political statements protected as freedom of speech? How a law can be passed prohibiting the specific act that is explained here, and they still can keep a student out of school ....... some attorney somewhere must know how to fight this.
