"This is how color-blind racism operates: silent, with brutal efficiency." James Finn and I both highlighted this -- brutal efficiency, heartless, sucking the life out of self-expression and cultural exuberance. That judge needs to retire. As a school administrator I believed our charge was to guide adolescent development, and that included self-expression, the formation of identity, especially culturally-related choices, but I faced immense pressure to "crack down" and afterward every problem was attributed to my "lax policies." Allen Iverson in the NBA "inspired" a whole dress code to squash his inner-city style; Colin Kaepernick showed his growing political awareness in steps of appearance, from traditional to corn rows to an Afro. Aren't political statements protected as freedom of speech? How a law can be passed prohibiting the specific act that is explained here, and they still can keep a student out of school ....... some attorney somewhere must know how to fight this. Thanks, Allison, for your ongoing research into the idiocy that isn't worthy of America. We can and should do better.
