Getting to Work

I was given an electronic ID and a classroom key. The staff meeting was held in a room that contained beds in various states of disrepair. Head Counselor Roman Silva, the man in the floral tie, had a stack of papers to distribute. The secretary took roll. The twins answered at the same time to Jensen. A curly-haired, barrel-chested man named Arthur Galloway passed out the teaching assignments but bypassed the twins. One twin wrote non-stop in a notebook. Dorothy helped with the distribution, gave me a copy of the illegible schedule.

Dorothy told me, ‘You’ll shadow me and Roman today.’

‘There’s something scheduled during lunch,’ a man called Saltair observed.

‘That’s a bleed-over from the 11am period,’’ Roman Silva said.

‘I don’t trust it,’ the man said. ‘The Union needs to confirm that. Last time — ‘

‘Can we get on with this?’ Dorothy snapped. ‘Students are waiting on us.’

‘I thought we agreed,’ a man with a brogue said, ‘we would refer to the lads as detainees.’ He tilted his head toward the twins.
