Pete Ross, we need a whole Medium publication that breaks off and collects stories of “Office Wars” and/or “Death by Desk in the Afternoon” because nearly everyone has worked in a corporation, or an office, or its corollary (my world), the public bureaucracy, and this shit is killing generations of decent people. I’d like to ditto the responder who brought up the evil of the “inappropriate” concept (catch phrase for anything outside a very narrow window of acceptable behavior, burst on the scene in the 1970s and now dominates moralistic office preaching). But the hypocrisy of “bringing your whole self to work” is as low as it gets. I was actually enthusiastic when I signed on for that with a workplace, it was actually in the contract, until I quickly realized that a blue shirt (instead of white, the boss’s choice) was their definition of an act of rebellion. My whole self would have been devoured by the mid-level managers who were the “Tyrants of the Appropriate” and the social media watchdogs who actually were open about monitoring the postings and the controversies and the cliques that formed on social media around certain issues …. that’s OK now; it does not seem intrusive or petty to them! I have a whole series of office-related pieces I’m now inspired to release. Take back the workplace!
