A quick anecdote: I'm a Democrat, sometimes even a step beyond liberal orthodoxy, but I am constantly seeking out ethical partners from the Republican side. A few years ago I came across a remarkable video in which S. Carolina Senator Lindsey Graham is driving though the south talking to a reporter about Joe Biden. The Senator is almost in tears as he describes the goodness of the man, the tragedies he's suffered, and he concludes with, 'If you don't have it in your heart to love Joe Biden, I can't imagine you have much room in there for God either.' I'm paraphrasing, but you get the gist. In looking for Christian compassion in my adversaries, I would never have believed I would find any of that in Lindsey Graham. But there it was, emotional, true, authentic, and it expanded my world. Let's keep trying to find this, wherever it might be.
